How Much Internet Speed Do I Need?
Est. Time: 60 seconds
Answer six questions and get a personalized internet speed recommendation!
How many people in your household use the internet/WiFi on a daily basis?
How many devices in your home connect to the internet, including tablets, gaming consoles, and smart devices?
How many people in your household work from home?
What video quality do you use for streaming TV and movies?
How intensely does your household participate in online gaming?
Does your household download large files from the cloud or via the internet?
How do you get a great deal on home internet?
If you’re looking for deals on internet, it really means one thing: you want to pay the best possible prices for reliable, hassle-free service. If you’re shopping for a new provider, look for a plan that’s a great value over time.
Our 2024 benchmark for great value? A plan with download speeds of at least 250Mbps and a total cost of about $50 per month.
If you can get all that plus perks and extras for switching to a new provider, we think you should. Every provider is going to make you jump through hoops, though, so make sure you follow their specific instructions to get the deals you deserve.
Below is a list of the best perks from each type of home internet.
Get 5G home internet
5G home internet is a relatively new type of Wi-Fi service offered by Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and a few smaller internet companies. To attract customers, Verizon and T-Mobile have slashed the extra fees that are common with other internet plans.
Here are a few perks you get when signing up for 5G home internet:
- No fee for equipment or installation
- No data caps (but speeds may be throttled)
- No annual contract or early termination fees
On top of that, both Verizon and T-Mobile go hard offering promotional perks, including trials for streaming services and generous discounts when you bundle your 5G plan with a qualifying phone plan. See our pages on Verizon Deals and T-Mobile 5G Deals for more info.
Get fiber internet
Fiber internet is always a great deal, no matter which plan or provider you get. It’s fast, reliable, and often as affordable as cable or DSL—but with much faster speeds.
Fiber internet plans also often come with extra perks you can’t normally get on a cable or DSL plan. With most gigabit plans, for instance, you’re likely to get free installation and equipment. Most fiber providers also offer unlimited data and month-to-month plans, so there’s no annual contract.
Depending on the provider, you may also be eligible for gift cards, trials to streaming services, and more.
Sign up for a phone and internet bundle
You can get generous discounts and cheap prices by ordering your internet and phone plan from the same provider.
It’s increasingly common for internet companies to offer phone service and for phone companies to offer internet. Generally speaking, these bundle deals fall into two categories:
- Option 1—Get a cheap phone plan from a cable provider. Xfinity, Spectrum, and Optimum give you low rates on phone plans if you’re already an internet customer. You get 5G access and unlimited data, but you pay much less per month than what the major cell carriers charge.
- Option 2—Get a generous discount from a phone company. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile reward phone and internet customers with generous discounts when they bundle services. You have to spring for a pricey cell plan, but you pay a lower fee for internet and may also be eligible for a prepaid gift card.
Most of us have times when we’re flush with cash, and other times when we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel. The good news is, it may be possible to get good internet service even if you’re running lean right now.
