Is Pairing Verizon Phone with Internet Worth It?

Verizon gives you a decent discount when you combine services

Verizon doesn’t offer the traditional bundle with a discount. Instead, you can save money by pairing select mobile plans with select home internet plans. Called the Mobile + Home Discount, you receive price cuts with both services along with reduced monthly charges when you add perks.

But how killer is this deal, exactly? Is this the best pick for budget users, or is it simply one more perk from a provider that offers more perks than you can count? We took a deep dive into Verizon’s internet and mobile bundle options to see what benefits you get.

How do you get a discount pairing mobile with internet?

You can get a discount whether you’re a new customer or an existing one. However, you can only get the Mobile + Home Discount deal by pairing specific mobile plans with specific internet ones. First, let’s start with mobile.

In addition to selecting an Unlimited plan, you can tack on “perks” that are discounted by up to 50% before you move on to choosing internet.

What perks can you add to the Mobile + Home Discount deal?

Perks are discounted add-ons you can get at any time. Verizon provides a handful of preset Mobile + Perk configurations, although you can start from scratch and pick your own. Here’s what you can add:

What internet plans qualify for the Mobile + Home Discount deal?

You can pair Verizon’s three Unlimited mobile plans with select fiber and fixed wireless internet services. But not all of Verizon’s plans are available in all of its service areas, so you may be limited on what you can get.

It’s all a little confusing, actually. The fine print specifically calls out these three plans if you’re ordering mobile service first.

But you’ll also read that existing customers with the Fios 1 Gig and Fios 2 Gig plans can add an Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Ultimate mobile plan and get a $10 discount per line. Adding Unlimited Welcome mobile service provides a $5 discount per line.

Moreover, Verizon’s FAQ says mobile and Fios customers can apply for Mobile + Internet Deal at any time so long as they have both services. Sigh.

Find your Verizon Home Internet options

It’s time for the moment of truth: can you get Verizon internet where you live? Run a speedy search with your zip code below to see if there’s a deal in your future.

Should you pair Verizon’s mobile service with internet?

Verizon doesn’t officially use the word “bundle” even though it’s a friendlier term than “mix-and-match” and “package.” But as we’ve shown here, Verizon offers discounts when you combine phone, internet, and third-party services. In the end, you save money no matter what term is thrown at you. That’s what counts, right? You know it.

Pros:

  • Super cheap prices for Fios and Home plans
  • Excellent network coverage
  • Tons of additional perks

Cons:

  • Confusing order process
  • Confusing sign-up requirements
  • Limited availability for Fios fiber plans

What we like: You get a top-tier phone plan and top-tier internet service

Verizon has arguably the best network coverage among the three major cellular carriers. Its 4G LTE network is available across nearly 60% of the country—including a lot of rural and remote areas—while its growing 5G and 5G Ultra Wideband (UW) network delivers superb speeds in many urban areas.

You can’t go wrong with Verizon’s internet plans, either. Fios fiber internet gets you an incredibly reliable connection. Verizon’s 5G Home Internet option is a great cost-saver for the budget-minded since it gives you respectable speeds at a flat monthly fee with no data caps and no extra costs for equipment or installation.

But here’s the catch: Pairing mobile with internet can get expensive

On their own without the Mobile + Home Discount deal, Verizon’s mobile plans are on par with the competition. It’s when you start tacking on perks and internet—not to mention multiple lines if you’re adding other members in your home—the pricing adds up.

For example, you have to:

  • Pick your plan
  • Pick your perks (if needed)
  • Pick your phone (if you’re not bringing your own)
  • Add more lines, perks, and phones
  • Pick your internet
  • Pay the activation and installation fees

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the fun anticipation of using a cool new phone while surfing on fast internet. However, don’t let all that excitement bite you in the… umm wallet.

Beware the fine print

Always read the fine print before you sign up for any service. It’s how we discovered the limitations put upon Verizon’s Mobile + Home Discount deal. Here’s what we discovered:

  • New customers can get discounts on mobile, perks, and home internet
  • You must enroll in the Mobile + Home Discount service to get the cost reductions
  • Existing Fios 1 Gig and 2 Gig customers can get $10 off per line when they get an Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Ultimate plan
  • Existing Fios 1 Gig and 2 Gig customers can get $5 off per line when they get any Unlimited plan.

Expert opinion: Get a prepaid plan instead if you’re on a budget

If saving money is your main concern, you might be better off skipping the Mobile + Home Discount deal and getting a prepaid phone plan instead.

Prepaid phone plans don’t require an annual contract and usually cost much less than postpaid ones. When you sign up for Visible’s basic phone plan and pay full price for a Verizon internet plan, you end up paying $30 per month less than the official, discounted Verizon bundle bargain.

Visible Wireless is owned by Verizon, so you get access to the same 4G LTE and 5G coverage. You don’t get 5G Ultra Wideband, and you get worse reception during times of network congestion when Verizon’s main customers get priority treatment. You don’t get the same perks, either. But your internet plan is exactly the same, and you save $360 every year.

Depending on where you live, you might also be able to find an internet plan for under $25 a month from one of Verizon’s cable competitors, like Xfinity or Astound Broadband.
